What is family Camp Celiac 2008?
A new gluten free camp for kids and families with celiac disease has its first ever session on Friday May 9 to Sunday May 11, 2008 at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, Georgia. www.camptwinlakes.org
Who can attend?
Any family with a family member with celiac disease. Children may not attend without a parent; the whole family is encouraged to come.
Why have a Celiac Camp?
We want everyone with celiac to experience a summer camp atmosphere without having to worry about the food. We want kids, parents, and siblings to meet each other and we want to learn from and support each other.
How much will it cost?
The maximum is $120 per person for the weekend over 8 years of age and $60 per person age 3 to 8. Under 3 is free. This includes all the food, lodging and activities. However, we have already started fundraising and expect the cost to come WAY down. Any fundraising that we do goes directly to cover our costs and reducre the fees. As of December 26th 2007, we have raised $2000 and we are just getting started.
What if I can not afford camp but want to attend?
We fully expect to have some scholarship money. Send an email with your scholarship request to celiacgroup@ccdhc.org
Can I raise money or donate?
Of course! Send an email to celiacgroup@ccdhc.org for details. Send checks made out to Camp Twin Lakes (tax deductible!!) to Children's Center for Digestive Health Care, 993-D Johnson Ferry Road, #440, Atlanta, GA 30342. You will receive a receipt and THANKS!
What activities will there be at Camp Celiac?
We will have a lot of fun!! Among the activities being planned are a ropes course and rock climbing, canoeing, fishing, arts and crafts, campfire cook out, sports, swimming, and a special Mother's Day celebration Sunday morning. We also want to have time for talking - maybe a question and answer session with a celiac expert, a support group for teens on a gluten free diet, or even cooking classes.
What should I bring?
Bring sheets, pillows and blankets (for single beds) and your own towels. Bring your toothbrush, soap and shampoo. Bring snacks if you like but we will provide them as well. Bring your own medications. Bring sun screen, bathing suits and be ready for a great time. Leave behind the electronics and computers and please don't bring any food with gluten.
What is the menu?
Of course, all the food will be gluten free and if you have other dietary requirements (like allergies or lactose intolerance) we will try to accomodate those as well). Parents who cook gluten free every day are creating the camp menu and will supervise the kitchen.
Who is running the camp?
Camp Twin Lakes is helping a group of parents and Dr. Jeff Lewis (www.ccdhc.org) get the ball rolling. Camp staff will be there throughout the weekend to ensure its success!!
